Do I need a softener on Charlotte city water?
Usually not. Charlotte Water runs moderately hard and it is already treated — most city customers get more benefit from a carbon filter for taste than from a softener. We will test and tell you if the honest answer is 'nothing'.
What about well water?
Different conversation entirely. Wells out toward Indian Trail, Mint Hill and eastern Union County commonly run hard with iron, and that is where a softener earns its money — in appliance life and in laundry that stops going orange.
How much salt does a softener use?
For a family of four on genuinely hard water, roughly a 40lb bag a month. If somebody quotes you a system that needs noticeably more than that, it is oversized for the house.
